Baker Family Ranch House above the Cub River several miles up the canyon from Franklin, Idaho

Part III of an audio recording of the personal biography of Harold Evans Baker born 20 April 1896, Franklin, Idaho. Based on a document compiled and typewritten by his daughter, Marva May Baker, born 7 May 1932. Voiced by his grandson (and Marva’s son) Kirk E Strickland.

Covering the years 1923 thru 1925, Harold recounts the birth of two of his sons: Gilbert Baker, apparently born earlier than expected and very small in size; and Evans Baker who lived long enough to experience but “three gasps for breath” before dying tragically. He experiences more grief as his beloved and beautiful mother, Lucy Evans, contracts a malicious, deforming cancer and suffers physical abuse from her husband and Harold’s father, Benjamin Charles Baker. Her cancer, however, is healed through miraculous and strange means that Harold describes in vivid detail. During this period, he also experiences much joy in child rearing and in work as he labors in the sugar factory and on the ranch as he somewhat reluctantly moves his family back on the ranch at his father’s urging.

Baker Family Ranch Home Near Franklin, Idaho

Part II of an audio recording of the personal biography of Harold Evans Baker born 20 April 1896, Franklin, Idaho. Based on a document compiled and typewritten by his daughter, Marva May Baker, born 7 May 1932. Voiced by his grandson (and Marva’s son) Kirk E Strickland.

Harold relates his happy experience as a newlywed, prosperous farmer, and new father as his wife, Alice Gilbert, gives birth to three of his children: a “robust” son, Orlin Harold Baker; another son, Donald Gilbert Baker; and a longed-for daughter, Melva Baker. Some of these births occur when his wife, Alice, and mother, Lucy Evans, quarrel for reasons he never comes to understand. He recounts working joyfully with his younger brother, John Reynold “Reynie” Baker and under a sharecropping arrangement with his father, Benjamin Charles Baker. After a period of prosperity, he cites disappointments and setbacks as farm commodity markets take a downturn forcing him to sell crops at a loss and divest of accumulated property including a home he built in Fairview, Idaho.

Harold Evans Baker Autobiography Part I

Family History Episode

In a departure from regular Gospel Doctrine podcast fare, we are publishing episodes featuring selections from family histories, journals, diaries, personal biographies, life stories, interviews and other sources–sometimes in the subject’s own voice and at other times voiced by contemporary family members. These audio files, having been uploaded to familysearch.org for archival purposes, are included here because of their general interest and potential for universal appeal and application.

Harold Evans Baker

Part I of an audio recording of the personal biography of Harold Evans Baker born 20 April 1896, Franklin, Idaho. Based on a document compiled and typewritten by his daughter, Marva May Baker, born 7 May 1932, who adds her commentary and insights to his history. This audio file is voiced by Harold’s grandson (and Marva’s son) Kirk E Strickland, born 24 May 9154.

Harold tells of his birth and childhood on a farm in southern Idaho. Self-described as bashful and timid in grade school, he tells how he dealt with bullying by older boys. He describes the very close and tender relationship he enjoyed with his mother Lucy Evans, born 13 June 1865, and characterizes the contention prevalent in his childhood home between his mother and father, Benjamin Charles Baker, born 5 November 1862. He suffers through the mumps and conscientiously completes his education through the eighth grade. He chronicles his work on and off the family ranch property, relating a tragic event that affected him personally. Also, he introduces how he met the love of his life, Alice Gilbert (born 16 March 1896) and worked to make her his his “Real Girl” forever.
